Start your year in pixels on any day, not just January
Most pixel trackers assume your year starts on 1 January. If you begin in June, five empty months stare back at you. In Tintle your year, quarter or month can start right now.
Why January starts stall
A tracker that only starts in January gives you two bad options for the other eleven months: wait, or start with a page of blanks. Both cost motivation. Waiting delays the habit. Blanks make the grid look like a failure before you have colored a single day.
Behavioral researchers call the alternative the fresh start effect. A 2014 study by Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis found that people are more likely to pursue goals right after temporal landmarks: the start of a week, a month, a semester, or a birthday. New Year is just the most famous one.
Pick a day one that is yours
- Today. The simplest landmark. Nothing to wait for.
- Next Monday or the 1st. Calendar landmarks that line up with weekly and monthly views.
- Your birthday. A personal year runs birthday to birthday and makes a natural review point.
- A life change. A move, a new job, the end of a project, the first week back after leave.
- The first day of a challenge. One month without coffee, a quarter of daily walks.
Choose a range
| Range | Good for | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Month | A short experiment with a clear end | 30 days without coffee, a month of early nights |
| Quarter | Making a new routine stick | Daily walks, a breathing practice, a new training plan |
| Year | Mood and seasonal patterns | A personal Year in Pixels from birthday to birthday |
How it works in Tintle
- Create an activity or choose a template.
- Turn off Linked to Calendar. Day one is today, so you can start right now.
- Choose month, quarter or year. The grid is laid out from day one.
- Tap a color each day until the period ends, then start the next one when you are ready.
Each activity has its own start date, so you can run a year-long mood grid that began on your birthday next to a 30-day challenge that started on Monday.
Fresh start questions
Can I start a mood tracker in the middle of the year?
Yes, and it often works better than waiting for January. In Tintle a year, quarter or month runs from the day you start, so the grid starts on your first square instead of showing empty months.
What is the fresh start effect?
It is a finding from behavioral research (Dai, Milkman and Riis, 2014): people are more likely to start pursuing goals around temporal landmarks such as a new week, a new month or a birthday. New Year is one landmark among many.
Tintle lets you turn any such landmark into day one of a new grid.
Should I track for a month, a quarter or a year?
Use a month for a specific experiment, a quarter for a new routine you want to make stick, and a year for mood and long patterns. Tintle supports all three. For challenge ideas see the challenge tracker guide.
What happens when my Tintle year ends?
You keep the finished grid and can share it as a card. Then start a new period whenever you are ready.
Is it bad to restart a tracker?
No. Restarting after a break is normal. Starting a fresh grid on a meaningful date is often easier than looking at a half-empty one. Tintle has no streaks, so a restart does not erase anything you did before.
