Year in Pixels ideas: color keys that stay readable all year
A good color key runs from less to more, uses shades you can tell apart and stays the same all year. Below are twelve ideas: six trackers you color in three shades and six yes/no trackers.
Five rules for a key that works
- Three shades. Light, medium and dark stay easy to tell apart in a tiny square. Leave the square blank on days you skip.
- One direction. Light to dark, always matching less to more.
- Lightness, not only hue. Shades that differ in lightness stay readable for people with color vision deficiency and in black-and-white prints (Crameri et al., 2020).
- Decide what less and more mean. Tintle's legend runs from Less to More. Write down what the lightest and darkest shade mean for this tracker, so you still agree with yourself in November.
- Keep it fixed. If you need a different scale, start a new grid instead of changing the old one.
Six trackers to color in three shades
Classic mood
Less: a heavy day. More: a good day.
Mood came first in the Year in Pixels. Create your own Mood tracker and rate each day as a whole.
Energy battery
Less: drained. More: full of energy.
How much energy you had, not how productive you were. Pairs well with sleep.
Anxiety level
Less: calm. More: anxious most of the day.
Light color for calm days so heavy ones stand out. Tintle has an Anxiety template.
Sleep quality
Less: a poor night. More: woke up rested.
Rate how rested you felt on waking. Shows whether bad nights cluster.
Social battery
Less: you need time alone. More: you want company.
Useful for introverts planning a busy week.
Movement
Less: a short walk. More: a full workout.
Minute buckets work well: blank for none, then under 15, 15 to 30 and over 30 minutes.
Six yes/no trackers
Binary grids are quick to keep. Mark "yes" with the same shade each time, the dark one for example, and leave "no" blank. Good candidates:
- Time outside. At least 20 minutes outdoors. Tintle has an Outside template.
- Water. Did you hit your own daily target? Tintle has a Water template.
- Breathing practice. Did you do a few minutes of slow breathing today?
- No caffeine. Good for a 30-day challenge.
- Reading. Ten pages or more.
- Connection. A real conversation with someone you care about. Tintle has Connection and Relationship templates.
Paper palettes or dark palettes?
Tintle has 4 free palettes, 12 Paper palettes in soft tones and 13 Dark palettes with gradient backgrounds, such as Aurora, Neon Nights and Ocean Deep. Four of the Dark palettes make the cells glow. The Relationship and Energy templates come with 2 palettes of their own. Paper palettes read like a printed journal. Dark ones make share cards stand out on Instagram. The palette only changes how your days look, so you can switch at any time and your entries stay the same. Pro unlocks all 31 palettes.
Color key questions
What are good Year in Pixels ideas?
Besides mood, you can track energy, anxiety, sleep quality, social battery, movement, water, time outside and simple yes/no habits. The best idea is something you can answer in one second every evening.
Tintle's Inspiration library has ready trackers for anxiety, movement and water, and with Pro also energy and time outside. Or build your own. Start with the Year in Pixels basics.
How many colors should a Year in Pixels key have?
Three shades plus a blank square. You can tell them apart in a small square, and they still show less, some and more. Most Tintle palettes have three shades: light, medium and dark.
What color means what in a mood tracker?
There is no fixed meaning. What matters is order: light to dark should follow less to more. Color psychology charts are a starting point, but your own consistent key beats any chart. In Tintle you can switch palettes later without losing entries.
Can I track several things in one Year in Pixels?
On paper, some people split each square in two to track a second thing. A clearer way is one grid per thing. Tintle gives each activity its own grid, so you can compare mood and habits side by side.
Are the color keys colorblind friendly?
Keys that change in lightness, not only in hue, stay readable for more people, including people with color vision deficiency. Tintle supports VoiceOver, which reads each marked day as light, medium or dark, plus Dark Mode and Reduce Motion.
